New Bern - Clarence Leven (Sonny) Gaskins suddenly departed on Saturday, June 10, 2017.
Sonny was a beloved husband and father who dearly loved his family. He enjoyed time spent camping and fishing, coin collecting, and gospel music.He was a member and deacon at St. Mary's FWB Church. He retired from Civil Service Supply Department at Cherry Point.
Sonny was born January 27, 1930 to Clarence Coye Gaskins and RosaBell Rice both of New Bern. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Patricia Gaskins, his children, Patty Bennett (Beck) and Nancy Tillery (George), grandchildren Matthew Hojatzadeh, Anthony (Monique) Bennett, Blake (Heather) Bennett; great-grandchildren, Ethan and Avery Bennett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Vida "Sis" Ipock.
He was nicknamed "Sonny" because his dad was in a movie theatre watching a movie named "Sonny" when he was born. In the end he finally won the sweepstakes he loved to fill out--he entered the Kingdom of God.
Memorial services will be held 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 13 at Pollock-Best Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Crocker officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home an hour prior to the service. Private burial will be at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
