New Bern – George Samuel Callender, 78, died Monday, June 5, 2017 at CarolinaEast Medical Center. He was born January 27, 1939 in Creighton, Pennsylvania.
George was a native of Pennsylvania but spent his adult life in NC. He was a resident of Cary, NC for 31 years where he raised a family and retired to New Bern 20 years ago. He is loved by all with his outgoing personality and his warm disposition. Professionally he worked in various countries.
He was preceded in death by his parents Laird Ira Callender and Lucille Elizabeth and brother Laird Alvin. George “Hey Dad” was the youngest of four children.
He was married 51 years to Louanne Callender. He has two sons, David A. Callender and wife Krista, and Dr. Sean L. Callender and wife Leslie Jo. His grandchildren are Samuel James Callender (16) and Sarah Laird Callender (13). His sister Mary Louise Houston and husband Ken also survive along with his brother Robert. In addition Cindy and Bob Hopper and other extended family members survive.
Funeral will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. from St. Paul Catholic Church. The burial will be Saturday at Raleigh Memorial Park at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church an hour prior to the funeral.
