Obituary for James "Jim" M. Gilbert

New Bern – James M. Gilbert, 93, died Monday, February 20, 2017 at Crystal Coast Hospice House.

He was born in Lenoir County on December 17, 1923, son of the late Francis M. and Mary Brown Gilbert. Jim had served in the US Navy during World War II as hospital corpsman, then as a navy supply supervisor with civil service. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Alice G. Gilbert; one son, James M. Gilbert, Jr. (Nan); one daughter, Brenda Deaton (Jim); stepchildren, Arthur Wolz (Cheryl), Tim Wolz (Beverly), Ricky Gonzales (Tyker), Roberta “Bobbie” Wolz and Marie Myers (John); grandchildren, Brian Deaton, Robert Deaton, Alicia Hoverson, Samantha Becker, Justin Wolz, Dierdre Averitt, Amy Wolz, Lori Goodwin, Michael Compton, Jennifer Leon, David Compton, Zoe Gonzales, Eli Gonzales, Tiffany York, Derrick Hare, Jason Gardner, Josh Hendren; great-grandchildren, Wesley Deaton, Luke Deaton, Tim, Lucas, Silas Jason, Jackson, Justin, Alexis, Harper and Piper; great-grandchild, Xyliana; and sisters, Claro Humphrey and Betsy Pittman.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Louise Dail, Eleanor Strickland, Alma Robinson, and Frances Votto; and stepdaughters, Linda Gonzales Hare and Jerri Lynn Hendren.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 25 at Pollock-Best Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park with military honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the memorial service.
