NEW BERN, NC
Mary Crute Whitford, 96, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, Feb 15, 2017. A native of Cumberland County, VA, Mary was the daughter of J. Mettauer and Mary Spencer P. Crute.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Louis D. Whitford, in 2003. She is survived by daughters Spencer W. Rouse of New Bern and Betty Lou Whitford of Auburn, AL; granddaughter Mary Spencer Rouse Thiem of Sarasota, FL; several generations of Crute and Whitford nieces and nephews, countless friends who loved her, and 2 beloved cats.
Mary was a resident of New Bern for over 65 years and retired from the Craven-Pamlico -Carteret Regional Library. She was a faithful member of Christ Episcopal Church and gave willing service through the many years on the altar guild, as a Sunday School teacher, docent, greeter, volunteer receptionist, assistant recorder of Sunday offerings, and wherever else she was needed.
Mary loved being with her family and friends and took special pleasure being around young children and babies. The family kept her well-supplied with pictures of the little ones, which she kept and treasured through the years.
