Harry Wooten Douglass, 95 passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 21, 2017. He was born in Kinston, NC on January 19, 1922 to the late William Birch and Annie Farmer Douglass.
Harry was raised in Raleigh and graduated from Needham Broughton High School in 1942. He then served in the U.S. Army from October 10, 1942 until February 6, 1946 when he received an Honorable Discharge. Harry was awarded the Purple Heart, Distinguished Service Cross, Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and the Italian Military Valor Cross. After being injured in combat, Harry returned home and attended Wake Forest College graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Harry married Jeanne Marguerite Rhodes in Raleigh, NC on June 5, 1948.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday School, the New Bern Lions Club(48 years) serving as secretary for 20 years and received the Lion’s Club Melvin Jones Fellow Award. Harry worked for the State of North Carolina Probation Department as Division Supervisor, moving to New Bern in 1962. He then became Director of Personnel & Safety for the City of New Bern from 1975 until his retirement. Harry was preceded in death by his wife Jeanne, brothers Clyde A Douglass, William C Douglass, William Birch Douglass & sisters Helen Douglass Hughes, Dolly Douglass Tyson and Josephine Douglass Dixon.
Harry is survived by his children Jeanne Douglass Huhn and husband Paul; and William Campbell Douglass, Sr and wife Melanie; his grandchildren, Melissa Robbins Eatherington and husband Robert; John B Robbins II and William Campbell Douglass, Jr and wife Molly. He also leaves behind his great-grandchildren Holly, Lance and Genevieve Eatherington.
The family will receive friends Thursday, January 26, 2017 at 3:00 PM followed by a memorial service at 4:00 PM at Pollock-Best Funeral Home, with Dr. Richard D. Seagle officiating.
