Obituary for Sean David Crouch

Sean David Crouch
Sean David Crouch

NORFOLK, VA.--An adventurous spirit "sailed away" when Sean David Crouch, 41, of Norfolk, Va., (Ghent neighborhood)), peacefully passed away, surrounded by family and friends, on Dec. 28, 2016. He was hospitalized at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, N.C., following a fatal car accident.
Born, Feb. 8, 1975 in Raleigh, N.C., he was the son of Christopher Randall and Jacquelyn Crouch Randall of Cove City, N.C., and Richard Lee Crouch Jr. of Oak Hill, West Va. Sean grew up in New Bern, N.C., having spent most of his youth living there with his parents, and considered it his hometown. Before moving there, however, he had also resided for various periods of times as a child, in Raleigh; Kingsport, Tenn.; Jackson, Mich.; and Cove City.
As a child, and throughout his entire adulthood, Sean had a longing and love for the ocean and all types of activities connected with the sea and the beach. From playing in the sand at Emerald Isle as a young child, to his love of surfing as a teenager around the Bogue Inlet and Emerald Isle piers, with his "buddies", to off-shore fishing, to becoming a certified scuba diver--Sean was "all things" about the sea. He found such serenity in a scuba diving trip on a dive boat in Bimini, with his connection to the sea. He later developed a love for sailing while living in Baltimore, Md.; and in Norfolk, felt such tranquility when sailing the Chesapeake Bay with his beloved 26-foot sailboat, the "Rigamarole," docked at Cobb's Marina in Norfolk.
In addition, he had a vast yearning for "high adventure" and during his lifetime, at various times, had enjoyed, among his many adventures, white water rafting and "hitting the slopes" at numerous ski lodges with his friends and family.
He had a yearning for travel, be it far or near--and among his travels were the joy of seeing for himself such places as Denali National Park in Alaska; Saint Martin in the Caribbean; and a backpacking trip with his Dad Chris, to Yosemite National Park in California following his high school graduation.
He also was a true, and dedicated environmentalist (as would later be seen in his chosen profession and university degrees), who felt the importance of protecting the planet for future generations. Sean also had a great love and "oneness" in the beauty of all of nature, and the woods; and among his many pursuits were camping, hiking, canoeing, and kayaking.
Left to cherish Sean's memory are his parents, Chris and Jackie Randall of Cove City; his father Rick Crouch of Oak Hill, West Va.; his grandfather Ralph Potter and wife Ruth Potter of Cove City; his aunt, Donna Potter of Garner, N.C.; his first cousin Samantha Van Gieson of Raleigh; his girlfriend Janice Gille of Virginia Beach, Va.; numerous family members and close friends; his former wife Megan Simon and dog Rufus of Redding, Calif.; and his cat, Zeke Crouch that lives with his parents.
Sean was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother Lucille McCoy Potter of Cove City; his grandparents: Richard Lee and Betty Crouch of Brookville, Pa.; and James and Georgia Randall of Agawam, Mass.; also, his uncle Greg Crouch of Annapolis, Md.; and uncle, Doug Crouch of a Michigan suburb. Also, his great grandparents: Dewey and Carrie McCoy of Cove City; Corbett and Ellie Potter of Bridgeton, N.C.; Harold and Laura Brown of Richland, Wash.; and Lee and Ethel Crouch of Norfolk, Va.
While living in Cove City, Sean attended Parrott Academy in Kinston, N.C. up until the fifth grade; and after moving to Fox Hollow (Trent Woods) with his parents, attended school in New Bern, and graduated from New Bern High School in 1993. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, N.C. in 1998. He further received his Master of Science Degree in Environmental Engineering and Science in 2010 from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md. In addition, he was certified as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT), with the State of Maryland in 2011.
Since January 2015, Sean has been employed as an Environmental Engineer, working as a Hazardous Waste Program Manager with Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Mid-Atlantic, at the Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Va.
Prior to that time, he had been employed for 15 years with various Environmental Consulting Companies in various capacities ranging from Project Manager/Staff Scientist; Environmental Scientist; Senior Project Engineer; and Environmental Engineer. Among those companies he worked with prior to his current position were: Piedmont Geologic, P.C. Raleigh, N.C.; CBM Environmental Services, Inc., Greenville, N.C.; Kleinfelder, Inc., Hanover, Md.; ARCADIS US, Inc., Millersville, Md.; Tetra Tech., Inc., Annapolis, Md., and AECOM, Inc., Columbia, Md.
Sean was a very reflective, introspective person of real character, loyalty, strength and courage, whose goal was to enjoy and appreciate life at the fullest. He strived to live a tranquil, uncomplicated life of simplicity and calm and had a deep love and devotion to his family and friends and was always willing to help others in any way he could. He was an organ donor; and as a young child, he joined the Cove City Missionary Baptist Church and took part in numerous youth activities and church programs. He was currently a member of the Sierra Club, as well as the Little Creek Sailing Association in Norfolk.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 6, at Pollock-Best Funeral and Cremations. The funeral service will also be held there on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. Burial will be at the Cove City Cemetery, which was Sean's desire--having a deep affection for the town that was such a part of his childhood.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sean's memory may be made to the American Brain Tumor Association, 8550 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., Suite 550, Chicago, IL 60631. (Web: www.abta.org) or email: info@abta.org
