Obituary for Norma Wellons Blevins

New Bern - Norma Wellons Blevins of New Bern passed away on September 13, 2016. Born September 27, 1920 in Kenly, NC to James Fred Wellons and Annie Denning Wellons. She graduated from Glendale High School in 1938, and East Carolina Teachers College (East Carolina University), Greenville 1942.

On June 5, 1948 she married Rev. Denver S. Blevins. Their first date was to a wedding rehearsal. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Rev. Denver S. Blevins, her parents, James F. Wellons and Annie Denning Wellons; brother James F. Wellons, Jr. and sister Faye Stone-Wellons Elliot.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Rebecca Blevins Bleau and Esther Blevins Patterson and husband William Patterson; five grandchildren Ashley Bleau (Brooke), Courtney Bleau, Tracey Bleau Neudeck (Matt), Will and Grant Patterson; six great-grandchildren Ashby-Kate and Bristol Bleau, Savannah Minchew, Dylan, Luke and Cara Neudeck.

Norma taught school from 1942-43 at Dover High School, 1943-1948 at Wilson Mills High School, 1948-1951 at Glendale High School where she also coached women's basketball. In 1951 she started her family. She also taught school in Craven County at Brinson Memorial the the latter 50's. Later she taught school in Kanawha County at DuPont, Jr. High, Belle, WV in the 60's and 70's; then returned to Craven County and taught at H. J. McDonald Jr. High School in New Bern until she retired in 1980.

She was very active in her church life teaching Sunday School, Women's Circle Meetings, singing in the Choir and being a gracious hostess in the manse. They served churches in Johnston County, Wilson County, Huntington, WV, Belle, WV, New Bern and Jacksonville, NC. Norma was a current member of First Presbyterian Church, New Bern.

Norma was blessed to have all her grandchildren to grow up around her in New Bern where she loved being involved in her grandchildren's lives, attending their dance recitals, sporting events, etc. She was the grandmother of 3 Eagle Scouts. She loved time traveling with the whole family to celebrate her Wedding Anniversaries, and other special events in her life to Branson, Nashville, Myrtle Beach, and the mountains of North Carolina, Florida and Morehead City. She was a Pirate fan. In her later years, she was always glad to receive a phone call from her nieces, nephews, grandchildren and her friends.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Thursday, September 15, at Pollock-Best Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park at 12 Noon, under the lakeside chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family simply requests your thoughts and prayers.
